Stepping into the captivating journey into the world of watches with William

He unravels the enchanting stories in timepieces. Meeting in Murphy's office told a lot about his personality and style. The office is decorated in Victorian style with dim lights, luxurious yet subtle and feels educated. William dresses like a traditional English gentleman, with a moustache, and fob chains for his gold pocket watch dangling on his grey waistcoat. In the quiet gaze at his Rolex, William's eyes share a story of pride and sincerity. It all begins with this watch, a timepiece that unfolds tales and marks the root of Murphy Johnson Watches Co.

Understanding how watches are made

"It is always fascinating to understand how watches are made, their accuracy, the development of craftsmanship over time, and most importantly, the story behind them," says William, the CEO of Murphy Johnson Watches Co., holding one of his favorite Rolex watches passed down by his grandfather. This Rolex Oyster, acquired in the 1970s, stands out as one of the few wristwatches capable of withstanding extreme cold. This model was used by Sir Edmund Hillary when he conquered Mount Everest, Earth's highest peak above sea level, with Tenzing Norgay in 1953. When William's grandfather purchased this watch, its cost equaled half a year's salary. He cherished not just its craftsmanship, but also the spirit of the explorers who took on the challenge, celebrating both personal accomplishments and achievements of his career. This watch sparks a connection with William's grandfather, setting the foundation for his relationship with watches and inspiring him to run a watch business. As the watch passed from his grandfather to his father and eventually to him, it became a symbol of generational inheritance, rendering this timepiece a priceless treasure to William.

A Priceless Generational Inheritance

Growing up in a Swiss village surrounded by groups of watchmakers, William's childhood was immersed in watchmaking tradition, culture and artistry. Guided by his father and grandfather, he learned a wealth of knowledge about watches and eventually took over the family business. His mission extended beyond merely running a business. He aspired to impart the wisdom and stories embedded in each timepiece to a broader audience. In William’s view, educating people about the value and craftsmanship of watches was not just a business endeavor but a familial legacy, an endeavor initiated by his grandfather.

The identity of Murphy Johnson, built by William's grandfather, is more than a brand. It is a legacy, passed down through the family. It also fosters entrepreneurship and a spirit of determination for future generations, inspiring them to pursue their dreams and discover their passions. In this context, watches are not just possessions but represent aspirational goals or achievements. They can also embody dreams, driving motivation for hard work and self-challenge. Additionally, a watch can also spark joy, preserve memories, and serve as a meaningful expression of love. The uniqueness of each watch lies in the individual memories it carries.

Timepieces as Personal Narrators

A watch encompasses not only tangible values but also resonates with intangible qualities that reflect one’s persona. "Each watch holds a different character and mood,” says William. “You can probably know a person by looking at the watch they wear on a given day. Conversations can also be sparked from observing someone's choice of watch." William selects various watches from the display window, attributing distinct moods to each. He noted that IWC Portugieser exudes a business-oriented appearance, radiating a sense of seriousness and professionalism. In contrast, the Rolex Submariner provides a sporty and adventurous feel to the day. William says, "These subtle cues from the watches can offer insights into a person's mood, providing an opportunity to strike up a conversation about their choice. I am confident the individual will have something interesting to share."

This sentiment becomes interesting when perusing the diverse collection of watches at Murphy Johnson’s store. Each watch tells a unique story and speaks for itself. Examining a watch's design unveils the era of its market release while looking into its details and corners unveils the user's habits and character. The ability of each watch to convey personal stories adds to their fascination, making them even more interesting and enjoyable to learn about and appreciate. In the context of a family business, these timepieces further serve as a connective thread within the family.

Pioneering Timepiece Journeys

For over 30 years, Murphy Johnson Watches Co. has continued to lead in consigning watches, allowing these timepieces to embark on their unique journeys. “There's a loyal customer who visits our store daily, eagerly anticipating the arrival of new watches that resonate with him and that he can take home,” says William. Transitioning to the digital realm, the family business broadens its horizons and welcomes diverse audiences worldwide to perpetuate the watches' remarkable journey. William's passion for watches goes beyond the pieces themselves. It is about preserving and sharing the stories they carry. As Murphy Johnson evolves, William aims to connect with watch enthusiasts worldwide and build a community appreciating the stories behind every watch. Through this evolution, he hopes to inspire a new generation to cherish the significance of watch development, craftsmanship, and the enduring legacy of each timepiece. "A good watch is durable and reliable, lasting for centuries and tells diverse stories,” says William.
